As we are approaching the festive season, with an expected increase in traffic on our roads, Vivo Energy Namibia, the company that markets and distributes Shell products and services in Namibia, joined forces with prominent media house, Namibia Media Holdings, to increase awareness around road safety.

The partners launched a public awareness campaign on Wednesday and were supported in their efforts by the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund of Namibia (MVA-Fund), the Private Sector Road Safety Forum (PSRSF) as well as the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

Speaking at the launch, Acting Petroleum Commissioner in the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Immanuel Nghishoongele said private-public partnerships have proven successful over the years and the launch of the campaign by Vivo Energy Namibia is another example of the private sector joining forces with the government to address a dire need of the Namibian public – that of safer roads.

“Vivo Energy Namibia has, over the years, played an active role in creating awareness among our Namibian road users – drivers and pedestrians alike. We acknowledge your contribution and thank you for the investment to this cause,” he said.

At the same event, Vivo Energy Namibia managing director, Johan Grobbelaar expressed the hope that the campaign would contribute towards changing driver behaviour and ultimately save lives on our roads.

Grobbelaar said the company implements various measures to ensure its employees uphold traffic laws. “While road safety is a culture within Vivo Energy Namibia, we trust that our efforts at educating the public will yield results and reduce traffic violations on our roads,” he said.

Speaking at the event, MVA-Fund Senior Manager for Accident and Injury Prevention, Sidney Boois said the current status of road crashes is a direct result of the choices and decisions taken by the entire road user system. “Blaming it only on the road user behaviour is a scapegoat, hence we need to interrogate the behaviour of the entire road safety system. Why are road users behaving in the way they behave? Driving with a beer in the hand around Windhoek? Taking pictures whiles speeding. There is the belief that there are either little to no consequences for certain behaviours and a lack of accountability,” he said.

Listing current accident statistics, Boois said year to date 648 deaths and 6116 injuries were recorded, resulting from 3455 crashes. He said the major causes of accidents were head-on collisions, roll-overs and accidents involving pedestrians.

Boois said the upcoming festive season road safety campaign framework includes law enforcement on the B1 and B2 routes; improving post-crash responses by setting up temporary Emergency Manager Rescue Services with partners on the B1 route at Etunda and Farm Sukses, as well as Wilhelmsdal on the B2 route; and lastly enhancing education and information campaigns which will focus on driver fitness and vehicle fitness, as well as passenger safety.

Boois commended Vivo Energy Namibia and others private sector partners for taking the lead in promoting road safety.

He requested drivers to pledge that they will adhere to the road rules and that they will encourage colleagues, friends and family to do the same. “Ensure you always buckle up and that all your passengers do the same before you start the engine of your car” he emphasised.

Boois said the MVA-Fund encourages all road users “to remain vigilant, keep to prescribed speed limits, avoid risky overtaking, mind stray animals, watch out for pedestrians, adjust to road conditions such as heavy rains which cause slippery roads and keep a safe following distance. And do not drive while under the influence of alcohol.”
