"Let’s Secure Zambezi" Initiative: Protecting a Lifeline, Empowering Communities
The Zambezi River, a majestic and life-giving waterway, starts its incredible journey in Ikelenge District, North-Western Province, Zambia. It flows through neighbouring countries, including Mozambique, Angola, and Zimbabwe, supporting ecosystems, economies, and communities across southern Africa. But this critical resource faces threats that demand urgent action.
The "Let’s Secure Zambezi" initiative – a powerful partnership between Vivo Energy Zambia and Stanbic Bank, bringing together tree planting, conservation, and community empowerment to safeguard the source of the Zambezi River.
A Community That Cares
On December 7th, the vibrant Lwakela Secondary School hosted the activation of this inspiring initiative. The local community welcomed stakeholders with heartfelt songs, thought-provoking poems, and earnest prayers – a reflection of their deep connection to the land. Speeches from partners highlighted how collaboration is essential to protecting the environment while uplifting communities.
13,000 Trees Planted – And We’re Just Getting Started
The centrepiece of the day was a monumental tree-planting activity. Together, the participants planted 13,000 trees – a bold start to what promises to be a lasting legacy. Vivo Energy Zambia took its commitment further, pledging to plant an additional 6,000 trees over the next two years.
Since 2021, Vivo Energy Zambia has been at the forefront of reforestation efforts through Project Restoration, having already planted over 50,000 trees. The initiative now includes a community nursery nurturing 30,000 seedlings, ensuring a sustainable source of greenery for years to come.
Turning Conservation into Opportunity
Environmental conservation can – and should – go hand-in-hand with empowering people. Through this initiative, Vivo Energy Zambia and Stanbic Bank donated 130 beehives to local community members. These beehives represent more than just honey; they symbolise hope, providing sustainable income opportunities while encouraging conservation.
A Shared Responsibility
The success of the "Let’s Secure Zambezi" initiative is built on collaboration. Local chiefs lent their voices and influence, recognising the cultural and ecological importance of the Zambezi’s source. The Forestry Department and National Heritage Conservation Commission brought their expertise, while the involvement of Permanent Secretary Dauty Chibamba of the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment underscored the government’s commitment to this cause.
More Than a Project
The "Let’s Secure Zambezi" initiative isn’t just about planting trees; it’s about planting hope. It’s about restoring landscapes, strengthening local economies, and ensuring the communities who live around the Zambezi’s source thrive for generations to come.
This effort to protect one of Africa’s most vital rivers is a testament to what we can achieve when we unite. Together, we’re not just securing the Zambezi – we’re securing a brighter future.
