Vivo Energy Tanzania Fuels Careers at Kurasini Secondary School:

In Tanzania, form four marks the final year of secondary school (O-levels), at this point students are required to decide if they are to pursue high school education (A-Levels) or go to a diploma for three years. To some, this is also the time their educational journey comes to a halt due to financial or family reasons. There are a lot of life altering decisions to be made.

As critical as this time is, many students find themselves face never-ending questions as to what career path they should pursue. It is for this reason, Vivo Energy Tanzania partnered with Bora International, a local organisation that focuses on leveraging transformative knowledge, skills, and connections to youth advancement to conduct a training catered to help students do career planning.

During the training students learnt how to explore their interests (learning about themselves, identify possible careers and researching), determining their aspirational job requirements (through internships, part time jobs and projects). And finally, how to work towards achieving the credentials required through online courses, formal education etc.

Catalyst Research reports that women account for less than a quarter (22%) of employees in the Oil and Gas industry in 2020. This means that there are fewer women in the energy business than almost any other major sector. On this account, Vivo Energy Tanzania female employees shared anecdotes of their own career journeys.

Devotha Kamala, a mechanical engineer, shared how she started her career as an intern and later progressed to a permanent position in the Supply and distribution department and pays an integral position in overall depot operations.

Jocelyne Simon, from the legal department shared how she used school debates, and presentations to sharpen per communications skills that are critical to her current role.

After the training, all the students found the information useful as expressed by Mwantumu Abdallah who said, ‘before this training I have had a difficult time deciding which career path to take, I’ve often been in limbo when it comes to career decisions. Today I’ve received the tools I need to change this. Thank you, Vivo Energy.’
