Nairobi, August 2023: Plastic pollution is a global challenge. The matter needs addressing if we want to continue enjoying our ecosystem and share a clean environment with the next generation. Shell & Vivo Lubricants has taken up the challenge of gradually cleaning up the plastics in our ecosystem and has now ventured into an eco-friendly packing direction.

In partnership with Blowplast Ltd and Mr. Green Trading Africa Kenya Ltd, Shell & Vivo Lubricants can now pack Shell lubricants in better environmentally sustainable packs. This has been made possible by manufacturing eco-friendly Shell lubricant packaging composed of post-consumer recycled materials (PCR). Using the PCR, Shell & Vivo Lubricants will achieve a minimum of 17% carbon emission reduction.

During the packaging unveiling, the General Manager of Shell & Vivo Lubricants Kenya, Mr. Phelix Ogolla, addressed the importance of running a sustainable and responsible business. “As part of our journey to be responsible to the environment, we have been exploring what we need to do with our packing to run a sustainable business responsible to the environment and respecting the communities that we exist in. Therefore, one of the initiatives we started was to review the content of our specifications in our plastic packaging in line with the Shell guidelines, the output being that we have now partnered with Blowplast and Mr. Green Africa to be able to use post-consumer recycled material in our plastic packs to be able to deliver that sustainability goal.”

Vice President of Shell & Vivo Lubricants, Mr. Ashish Chaturvedi, commended the Kenya team for implementing the initiative, which highlighted that it is part of the entire business plan for operating sustainably.

Blowplast Ltd. Group Managing Director Sanjay Brahmbhatt gave the assurance that his organization will not tire in the efforts of reducing the plastics in the environment, and that is why they have taken the direction of using PCR in their business in a bid to fulfill their brand promise of “Built for the future,” and supporting the Kenyan Circular Economy.

Founder Mr. Green Trading Africa Kenya Ltd. Mr. Karim Debabe acknowledged that plastic removal from the environment is challenging; he appreciated the effort, time, and money being put into the campaign. He added, “It is not easy; there will be many challenges going down the road, but as a team in the partnership, we will be able to show bigger numbers and success stories.”

Country CEO Kenya at Mr. Green Trading Africa Kenya Ltd., Sonia Orwa, said, “This is a great moment not only for Mr. Green, Blowplast, and SVL but for the world. We all know we have an enormous plastic challenge, and what we are doing today is to show that we are acting, and not just printing stories on our websites, that we are really taking the plastics in the environment and bringing it back and giving it a new life.” She added, “For Mr. Green, it is an inspiring moment because this is 30% recycled PCR in this package for Shell. I think 100% we are cleaning the environment the world knows we need to, but even more so, we are giving livelihoods to many people.

The Shell & Vivo Lubricants sustainability journey continues one container at a time.
