Accra, Ghana– December 14, 2023 - Vivo Energy Ghana, the exclusive marketers and distributors of Shell branded products and services as part of its corporate social responsibility has donated a Smoke Evacuator with accessories and a trolly to the Surgery Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) to facilitate the delivery of quality health care.

Experts have identified the release of harmful smoke which contains toxic gases and vapours during electrosurgical operation.  According to them, the exposure by medical staff and patients to the smoke may cause health related issues such as viral contamination, respiratory problems, nausea and burning sensation in the eyes. However, the use of a Smoke Evacuator helps to prevent these associated health risks.

Presenting the equipment at a short ceremony, the Corporate Communications Manager of Vivo Energy Ghana, Shirley Tony Kum, said the use of the smoke evacuator will enhance the quality of health care and ensure that surgical staff and patients undergoing surgery do not end up contracting other forms of health conditions as a result of surgical smoke. “This further contributes to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 which aims at ensuring good health and well-being for all, at all ages, she added.

The General Surgeon, Breast Surgery Unit of KBTH, Dr Josephine Nsaful, who received the equipment expressed gratitude to the Vivo Energy Ghana team for their continuous efforts in contributing to the improvement of health care delivery through various interventions by the company. She explained that the electro surgical equipment used for breast surgeries produces a lot of smoke and its repeated exposure presents a potential health risk to both patient and staff, as airborne viruses are released into the atmosphere during procedures. “The donation is timely as the equipment will help us discharge our duties in a safe manner whether saving the breast, removing the breast or creating a new breast ”, she added.

As an industry leader championing and maintaining rigorous international health and safety standards, Vivo Energy Ghana believes that the donation accentuates its commitment to ensuring the overall health and safety of its people including employees, customers, and the community at large.
