Vivo Energy Zambia launches its tree planting initiative, Project Restoration

Lusaka, Zambia – July 12, 2024 – Vivo Energy Zambia, the company that distributes and markets Engen fuels and Shell lubricants in Zambia, is proud to announce the launch of its ambitious environmental campaign, Project Restoration. This initiative aims to address deforestation and promote environmental sustainability through an extensive tree planting program in Lusaka’s South Multi-Facility Economic Zone.
Project Restoration is set to plant one million trees in regions affected by deforestation and land degradation. The initiative aligns with Vivo Energy’s commitment to sustainability.
Starting 12 July 2024, Vivo Energy Zambia will collaborate with external stakeholders to plant trees in the Multi-Facility Economic Zone located in Lusaka. The species selected will be indigenous trees native to the regions to ensure an ecological balance and maximum survival rates.
Education and active participation are crucial components of the project. Workshops and seminars our partners Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone (LS-MFEZ), Japan Tobacco International (JTI), British American Tobacco (BAT) and Mohab Transport be conducted to raise awareness of the importance of reforestation and environmental stewardship.
The project will emphasise the use of sustainable planting practices. This includes selecting appropriate sites, preparing the soil, and providing ongoing care to ensure the young trees reach maturity.
Lastly, a comprehensive monitoring system will be implemented to track the tree planting progress with regular updates and reports shared with stakeholders.
Edward Walugembe, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Zambia, said: “Planting trees is more than just an environmental activity, it is an investment in our future. Trees play a crucial role in combatting climate change, providing oxygen, improving air quality, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. This initiative aligns with our broader sustainability agenda, which aims to create lasting positive impacts on the communities we serve. I encourage everyone to reflect on the importance of Project Restoration and consider how we can all contribute to a sustainable future. Let us work together to ensure that Zambia remains a land of beauty and abundance for the generations to come.”
Vivo Energy Zambia partnered with the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone to ensure the success of Project Restoration. This partnership will provide the energy company with the technical expertise, resources and additional support required to maximise the initiative’s impact.
Mr. Boster Chiyaba, Chairperson of the Board at Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone said: “We are delighted to collaborate with Vivo Energy on Project Restoration. True progress must include environmental conservation and this initiative is a crucial reminder that economic development and environmental protection go hand in hand. With Project Restoration, we’re taking a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint, enhancing green spaces and promoting biodiversity.
