Vivo energy Rwanda family plants two hundred and fifty trees to prevent land slide and donates health insurance to the most vulnerable people of Nyamyumba Sector

Deforestation in Rwanda has been driven by the need for food, medicine, charcoal, and timber. The loss of tree cover in a rainy, mountainous country has had severe environmental consequences. In addition to tremendous loss of biodiversity, the region experiences soil degradation, erosion, and landslides.

On Sunday 14th August 2022, Vivo Energy Rwanda team carried out tree planting to revive the land and fertility of the soil in a degraded area in Nyamyumba sector.

Nyamyumba sector is one of the 13 Sectors of Rubavu district. It is the sector that has the most attraction as it is home to the biggest hotels such as Galaxy Hotel, Nirvana, Hakuna matata, Brasserie, the biggest Brewery in Rwanda, Shema Power Lake Kivu (SPLK) Shema Power a Rwandese independent power producer who have signed a power purchase agreement with the Energy Utility Corporation Limited (EUCL) an energy company providing main grid electricity in the Country.

We were welcomed by the Executive Secretary of Nyamyumba sector Mr. NIYOMUGABO Innocent accompanied by Rwanda National Police, Rwanda Defence forces and other local authorities.

In his speech, Mr. Niyomugabo said In the main speech, that he was grateful of the good work organized by this society and promised cooperation and thanked them for thinking of coming to Nyamyumba sector and chose it and promised not to leave these trees and asked them to continue the relationship.

The Group recently unveiled the Vivo Energy Sustainability Framework, which consists of three key pillars that are supported by our principles of People (safe and empowered teams), Planet (minimizing our impact), and Partnerships, to direct our approach to sustainability, ensure we are focused on the areas that matter, and provide a clear and simple framework for all our ESG and sustainability activities (leading by example). Employees were encouraged to volunteer to become Green Champions in order to support and advance environmental sustainability initiatives across the Group. 

The participation of Vivo Energy Rwanda in planting 250 trees alongside River Koha in nyamyumba sector and donated health insurance to financially vulnerable people resulted in a positive brand image and awareness.

As we concluded our visit to Nyamyumba sector our MD Saibou Coulibaly said that he was pleased to be part of such a welcoming society also appreciated the way they were received and reiterated Vivo’s commitment to have a positive impact to safeguard the environment.
